Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:35 PM
about 3 weeks ago one of the smoke detectors in my apartment started beeping every minute or two, based on some googling that seems to mean it’s dusty inside
it’s been beeping ever since
and i just though of this brillient solution
http://s.evansolomon.me/image/2U2l050H1C2H
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:36 PM
wow, that’s a jorbin typo right there.
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:36 PM
shut up
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:36 PM
what the fuck
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:36 PM
forgetting the ‘t’ on thought is a typo, but brillient? I’m laughing cause I thought it was jorbin who typed it.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:37 PM
let’s not distract from Evan’s “solution”
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:37 PM
dude, just unhook the smoke detector and blow on it.
a can of compressed air is like $3
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:37 PM
Evan, tell them what happened when you tried to take care of the dust.
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:38 PM
I can’t remove the ones in my place
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:38 PM
nacin: i can’t get it off the wall
or at least, i can’t do it in a way that i’m clearly not going to break it
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:38 PM
there’s a wire going in it and you jave to cut it
they are networked
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:38 PM
which i worry would make it even louder
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:38 PM
Evan tried to use his vacuum
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:38 PM
yea, this one has wires too
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:38 PM
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:38 PM
yea i did try to use a vacuum
but that caused more problems
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:38 PM
and didn’t realise there wasn’t a extension on it
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:39 PM
Just ordered that today.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:39 PM
so he pulled one of the tubes out
and shot dust all over
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:39 PM
NEW EPISODE!
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:39 PM
mark: depending on how long i continue to deal w/ this
it might be its own miniseries
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:39 PM
Maybe it will be a recurring segment of each episode.
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:39 PM
Evan: you sure it’s not a battery?
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:39 PM
Like the Simpsons couch gag.
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:40 PM
pete: there’s no batter as far as i can tell
i assume it’s powered by the wires
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:40 PM
There’s a battery backup.
Have you tried twisting it?
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:40 PM
all smoke detectors in my place have a batter and wires and all of them go off if a single battery is low
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:40 PM
twisting what?
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:40 PM
The unit.
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:40 PM
Mark: I was going to ask the same thing, but figured “Yeah, of course he did”
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:40 PM
is it a smoke detector or CO detector?
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:41 PM
i have tried opening it every way i can think of
pete: honestly i have no idea
how would i tell?
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:41 PM
take a pic
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:41 PM
without your “solution”
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:41 PM
CO detectors usually have a little screen on them, don’t they?
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:41 PM
ok, one minute
this one does not have a screen, i know that
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:41 PM
Chex: I’ve seen CO detectors w/o a screen
http://www.target.com/p/first-alert-co400-battery-powered-carbon-monoxide-alarm/-/A-11134898?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=Google_PLA_df&LNM=%7C11134898&CPNG=home%20improvement&ci_sku=11134898&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:42 PM
No way that’s a CO detector.
Daryl Koopersmith 9/24/12 10:42 PM
“he’s an adult person… I don’t understand!” —Chex
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:42 PM
http://s.evansolomon.me/image/3D1q1u3F0z1J
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:42 PM
CO detectors are usually plugged into outlets, very rarely (never) built into apartment buildings, and definitely not built so high.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:43 PM
yeah, ours is like what nacin said
that said, that link clearly said its a CO alarm.
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:43 PM
here’s a bigger one, in case one of you is a wiring expert or something http://s.evansolomon.me/image/3n3o3K143h1M
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:43 PM
Nacin: mine are different… CA just passed the CO law last year
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:43 PM
interesting, that one seems to have rotated itself
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:44 PM
And the back?
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:44 PM
did you try changing out the battery?
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:44 PM
Nacin: he didn’t see a battery
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:44 PM
i haven’t found a battery in it
i’ll go get a picture of the back, one minute
Daryl Koopersmith 9/24/12 10:44 PM
that might be the problem
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:45 PM
Daryl — I really hope he’d have mentioned “oh, but I found an empty 9v compartment”
Daryl Koopersmith 9/24/12 10:45 PM
On this show, you never know.
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:45 PM
Let’s find out! /me turns head
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:45 PM
hahaha
here’s the back http://s.evansolomon.me/image/0333062b2N40
i am sure that wire thing comes out, but it doesn’t seem easy to remove
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:46 PM
so it’s a smoke alarm.
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:46 PM
Are you fucking kidding me
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:46 PM
You can pull the wires out
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:46 PM
Dude, read the fine print.
bullet 5.
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:46 PM
WITH 9 VOLT BATTERY BACKUP
Bottom line
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:46 PM
Koop and I are loading images of Evan’s smoke detector at the same time sitting right next to each other
What a way to spend a Monday night
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:46 PM
to be fair, it’s harder to read here because it beeps really loud every minute
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:47 PM
“Horn chirping once a minute indicates that battery needs to be replaced.”
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:47 PM
The compartment door is probably under the sticker.
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:47 PM
Or installed.
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:47 PM
Don’t do anything except start cooking something and then leave your apartment
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:47 PM
LOL
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:47 PM
poke with a knife to find the seams.
Dion 9/24/12 10:47 PM
I love the fact It’s probably going to beep when you open it too
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:47 PM
Might be a good idea for Evan to not poke it with a knife. He’ll probably hit one of the wires.
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:48 PM
Meh, it’s not a lethal wire.
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:48 PM
Mark: He’s small.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:48 PM
HOW HAVE YOU SURVIVED TO ADULTHOOD?
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:48 PM
9 volts wouldn’t kill him
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:48 PM
“This surprises the Evan”
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:48 PM
i don’t think i have 9 volt batteries either
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:48 PM
Can you setup a live stream before poking with a knife?
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:48 PM
hahahaha
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:48 PM
Volts wouldn’t kill you… amps will
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:48 PM
Google hangout please
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:48 PM
let me go see if i have batteries first
oh shit i have one
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:49 PM
test it with your tongue to see if it is still good
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:49 PM
should i really poke it with a knife? is that how they intend for people to do this?
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:49 PM
good for the tongue != good for the smoke detector
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:49 PM
It should taste “spicy, but flavorful”
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:50 PM
or you can just unplug it for now
plug it back when you get the battery
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:50 PM
i can’t get the wires out
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:50 PM
probaby illegal
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:50 PM
i tried that
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:50 PM
don’t tell the kid who can’t read bullet points to disable his smoke alarm please
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:50 PM
and i feel like if i break that part
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:50 PM
he’ll be dead in a week
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:50 PM
it will be bad
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:50 PM
do this with the knife – http://www.chud.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Drag-Me-To-Hell-Cat-Stabbing.gif
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:50 PM
see that thing in the back with the three wires
it’s a plug
Dion 9/24/12 10:50 PM
just before you go playing with a knife… do check the wording beside that plug… White = Neutral.. just make sure it’s not a 110V plug.. I know the Australian ones sometimes do have mains on it…
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:50 PM
ok i’m going to try this
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:51 PM
Dion has just established himself as the expert who should walk you through this
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:51 PM
i’ll bring the laptop over there
Dion 9/24/12 10:51 PM
HAH
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:51 PM
Livestream link?
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:51 PM
it’s definitely 110V to the plug
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:51 PM
evan: don’t touch it with a knife
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:51 PM
american homes are not wired for 9volts
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:51 PM
that’s not where the compartment is
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:51 PM
and I don’t see a transformer in the wall
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:51 PM
should be on the side
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:51 PM
i’m going to use a paring knife, i feel like that’s the perfect tool for the job
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:52 PM
hey, everyone! user manual. http://www.electricbargainstores.com/v/vspfiles/PDF_spec/BRK/4120B-manual-english.pdf
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:52 PM
lol
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:52 PM
lol
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:52 PM
just so you all know
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:52 PM
Just a second late: http://homeappliance.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/brk_electronics/4120b_4120sb_m062016007.html?idRes=367427
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:52 PM
this probably looks hilarious
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:52 PM
How many people does it take to change the battery in Evan’s smoke detector?
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:52 PM
oh good, now at least we can load balance our clicks across two manuals
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:53 PM
you should be able to unplug it
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:53 PM
what page is the battery info on
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:53 PM
look for the release latch on it
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:53 PM
IMPORTANT
9/24/12 10:53 PM
Once the Smoke Alarm is installed, you must
disconnect it from the AC power before unlocking
the battery compartment.
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:53 PM
what I said!
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:53 PM
evan: srsly, if you can’t read a PDF, I don’t know what to do.
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:53 PM
Try opening it by heating up the knife
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:53 PM
just to reierate: telling me to unplug it is not useful
i have tried that many times
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:53 PM
is the battery compartment on the side?
It looks like it’s on the side.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:53 PM
To be fair, I don’t think this is exactly a straight forward process
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:53 PM
Pull harder
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:53 PM
oh shit
i found it
mark: +1
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:54 PM
Use your muscels
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:54 PM
jesus, jorbin.
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:54 PM
I said it was on the side earlier.
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:54 PM
I figured he looked at all the non-covered-by-sticker portions already.
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:54 PM
nacin: i mostly ignore you
FUCK ITS STILL BEEPING
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:54 PM
YES BECAUSE IT HAS A BATTERY
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:54 PM
i just replaced the battery
shouldn’t it stop beeing now?
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:55 PM
now you have to plug it back in
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:55 PM
with a fresh battery?
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:55 PM
i never unplugged it
Daryl Koopersmith 9/24/12 10:55 PM
OMG
RUN
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:55 PM
or did you use the battery you put in a drawer the last time this happened?
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:55 PM
there is a light on it that was red and is now green
i feel like that’s progress
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:55 PM
[9/25/12 1:53:20 AM] Chelsea Otakan: IMPORTANT
[9/25/12 1:53:21 AM] Chelsea Otakan: Once the Smoke Alarm is installed, you must
disconnect it from the AC power before unlocking
the battery compartment.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:55 PM
WHERE IS THE VIDEO
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:55 PM
HAHA
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:55 PM
it’s not just me you don’t listen to
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:56 PM
hmm, it may have stopped beeping
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:56 PM
IT SAID IMPORTANT IN ALL CAPS
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:56 PM
this is the highlight of my day
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:56 PM
the battery part seemed very safe
Pete Mall 9/24/12 10:56 PM
probably the week. I’m lame
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:56 PM
just so you can all imagine it with full detail, i replaced the battery while holding a paring knife in my mouth
Aaron Jorbin 9/24/12 10:56 PM
without a livestream, we have no way of knowing if Evan is actually still alive
Mark Jaquith 9/24/12 10:56 PM
I like how Evan > Space Shuttle.
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:56 PM
ok it has not beeped since i last cursed
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:57 PM
You have robbed us of the best comedy show of all time
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:57 PM
that was over 1 minute ago
this is pretty cool
Dion 9/24/12 10:57 PM
If it’s still in testing mode, it’ll probably still beep for another 15mins or something
but Green = Good!
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:57 PM
evan: did you time it? did you account for daylight savings in said timing?
Dion 9/24/12 10:57 PM
I feel this is also the time you should hit the test button, just to make sure every other one in the building beeps at you
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:57 PM
i actually went back to look at the skype log from when i said FUCK
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:57 PM
haha
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:58 PM
dion: i made the mistake of hitting the test button when it first started beeping
not going to fall for that again
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 10:58 PM
I sleep through smoke detectors, so they’re not particularly useful to me.
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:59 PM
Yeah, when ours started beeping, we removed the battery
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 10:59 PM
just bought one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004W3ZE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 10:59 PM
Andrew’s dad, who is a firefighter, was like “Eh, whatever.”
Andrew Nacin 9/24/12 11:00 PM
Chex: guilty.
Evan Solomon 9/24/12 11:00 PM
not going to get fucked by this thing again
Chelsea Otakan 9/24/12 11:00 PM
That’s what … people who went to Folsom Street Fair said.
I might be late to the party, but I don’t think I have laughed so much before. Poor Evan, all he really wanted to do was stop the noise …
